Went to church with a friend this Sunday. I knew that I might have to hear some things I didn’t particularly like as it was Baptist church. I knew that the music would suck, as they tended to buy into ‘modern’ hymns, which sound a bit like bad soft rock, but are more accessible to certain groups. The words don’t really fit into the song, but can be (and often are) forced. The hymns are projected onto farming scenes, (as we are in Sacramento) and at the end there are credits, copyright dates etc. I myself, am more a fan of hymns with some substance, some depth, worthy of some reflection. A little “He made you, He is Lord…so praise him” is simply not enough. Give me a little bit of plot. A little “He hath said, thy foot shall not be mov-ed. Thy keeper will never slumber, never, will never slumber”. An interactive deity, a supportive God with joys and sorrows, who will go through ‘it’ with you.
Anyway.
The first thing that happens is that there is an anti-gay marriage inset in the program. Well such is to be expected at a Baptist church. But some of the stuff they were saying was a little excessive. Gay people are not “anti family”. By supporting gay marriage one does not make one’s (the word used was ‘our’) children into guinea pigs, by encouraging motherless and fatherless homes. These people would have children one way or another, if they desired to gay, straight, or celibate.
Then the pastor comes out and starts saying that multiculturalism must bow to nationalism. That would have been an acceptable discussion, but then he revealed that his problem with multiculturalism is that terrorists need to give up the part of their culture that betrays the nation in which they live. (What?) So he is teaching that terrorism is cultural??? He started quoting Tony Blair and all kinds of politicians.
To make matters worse, then he goes into how Satan is the Ruler of our lives these days and God has basically no influence. And going on and on about how Christianity is a counter-culture in the US and how Christians must protect themselves as a minority. …Woah isn’t that like the “cultural terrorists he was just talking about”???
Poor innocent children whose parents are blind enought to let them grow up there...
